My Dad, Dr. Sivaramalingam Manickavasagar, M.D. F.R.C.S.(age 91, D.O.B. 02/22/1932) was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England and Edinburgh and Board-Certified in Emergency Medicine. Dad served over 60 years in the medical profession and over 20 years in the military as a physician. Dad was licensed in Virginia and North Carolina as a physician and worked throughout the United States including the state of Texas and many military facilities. Dad had successful careers in cardiothoracic, orthopedic surgery in three different countries : Sri Lanka, England, and the United States. Dad's bold move to immigrate to the United States, begin medical work in Providence, Rhode Island, raise a family, live in 2 homes in Chesapeake, Virginia and Gainesville, Virginia, and selflessly provide a better life for his only son to achieve the American Dream was inspiring to his family. Dad was a very compassionate, sensitive, humble person who helped his family members without expecting help in return. Since August 2019, when Dad was very ill and entered the Sentara Woodbridge Hospital, I helped to take care of Dad as his Caregiver and always gave more than 100% effort. Despite many health setbacks and illnesses, Dad persevered with tenacity until his last breaths and I always supported Dad as his guardian angel and was relentlessly by his side during his darkest moments. Although Dad and I shared many memories playing tennis together, sight-seeing Washington, D.C. and Disneyworld, our greatest memory will be our last four years where I helped to save his life on many occasions and hoped that Dad would live at least another 10 years. Dad helped our family by working as a physician, as well as other responsibilities such as driving, cooking, cleaning. In the last 4 years, Dad was independent at home until the last 4 months when he became bed-bound. Dad guided me toward a successful graduate career at Georgetown University, a respected institution, in 2 different programs(Biotechnology, Pharmacology). My final dream for Dad was not realized to take him in Unique Hands Medical Transport in a wheelchair to the Reagan Airport, fly first-class to Stanford, buy a Rolex watch for Dad, and take Dad for a ride in a Rolls Royce, live in a mansion in California with Dad. I was nevertheless able to provide Dad with a high quality of life in the past 4 years and accomplished many milestones. As I pursue my goals of a Ph.D. Georgetown University and M.D. at Stanford University, the memory of Dad was always glow brightly in my heart, his kindness and empathy will be in my heart. His teachings and guidance left such an indelible legacy and lasting influence on my life. Dad was a loving father, husband, mentor, role model, best friend for me, deeply devoted to his family, courageous, inspiring, caring human being. -Ravi Manickavasagar Family and friends will gather for a Visitation on Thursday, July 6, 2023, from 9:30-11:30 AM at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, VA 20110, where an opportunity to share memories along with a prayer service will take place. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 PM at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Hwy., Manassas, VA 20109.
