Matthew John Mulhern

Matthew was born on October 1, 1980, in Oakton, Virginia, to James and Patricia Mulhern. He attended St. Timothy’s and St. Andrew’s before graduating from Centreville High School with the Class of 1999. After attending Shepherd University, Matthew began his career in 2005 as an educator with Fairfax County Public Schools, where he taught Physical Education before transitioning to the role of School-Based Technology Specialist. Matthew also was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and received a Masters in Educational Technology from George Mason University. Throughout his career, Matthew dedicated countless hours to supporting students beyond the classroom. He led before- and after-school programs, coached baseball, and volunteered his time and talents to help build an outdoor learning center. His commitment to helping others extended far beyond his professional responsibilities. Outside of work, Matthew enjoyed woodworking and tackling a variety of projects, but his true passion was fishing. Those who knew him will remember many summers spent attending concerts featuring his favorite artists, Dave Matthews and Jimmy Buffett, and fall and winter weekends cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Matthew will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone in need, his generous spirit, and the tremendous amount of "stuff" that always seemed to occupy the back seat of his car. Matthew was preceded in death by his father, James Mulhern Sr. He is survived by his daughter, Kylie Mulhern; his mother, Patricia (Barry) Gottshall; his brother, Jimmy (Amanda) Mulhern Jr.; his sister, Amanda (Manu) George; his nieces, McKayla, Isabel, and Olivia; his nephews, James III, Jacob, and Max; and many other family members and friends who loved him dearly. Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday, June 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, Virginia 20110. Flowers are welcome. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering willingness to help others will be remembered always.
