Mabel Laverne Black

Mabel Laverne Black, 85, of Manassas, Virginia, passed away on June 10, 2022. She was born on April 26, 1937, in Manassas, Virginia to Odie and Myrtle Cornwell. After graduating high school Mabel began a fifty (50) year career with MIFCO starting in Woodbridge and later transferring to Manassas, where she made lifelong friends who became family. She was a Life Member of the Osbourn Alumni Association. Mabel dedicated her life to always doing for others, and she knew no strangers. While her kids were growing up, you could find Mabel at the ballfields, working concessions, or volunteering in the schools. Mabel was an avid gardener and canned many vegetables over the years, especially known for her green beans. Everyone who knew Mabel and many who didn’t could count on her delicious home baked cookies and popcorn whenever they visited. In honor of her, Mabel’s grandchildren and great children made sure to have a popcorn popping day with her during her last days, and that brought her great joy. Mabel joins her husband, Richard Gary Black, her brothers, Alvin “Bill” Cornwell and Kenneth “Dickie” Cornwell, as well as her parents. She is survived by her children, Keith Black (Patti), Kevin Black (Chrissy), and David Black (LeAnn); Grandchildren, Ali Williamson (Chad), KJ Black (Katie), Elaine Vazquez (David), Allan Black, Matthew Young, Anna Cannarella, Jessica Clegg (Dereck), Brandon Ferguson (Emily), and Kimberly Reed (Ben); as well as 13 Great-Grandchildren; her siblings, Walter “Tootie” Cornwell (Betty), Carrie “Liza” Garner, Charlotte “Jackie” Anderson; a host of nieces and nephews, many cousins, and a village of people who knew her as Mom Black or Grandma Black. A viewing for Mabel will be held at Pierce Funeral Home (9609 Center Street, Manassas, Virginia 20110) from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, June 19, 2022. Her funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 20, 2022, also at Pierce Funeral Home. Burial will follow immediately after the funeral service at Stonewall Memory Gardens (12004 Lee Highway, Manassas, Virginia 20109), and a reception will follow at Nokesville Vol. Fire Dept. at 12826 Marsteller Dr., Nokesville VA.
