John William Mitchell

John William Mitchell (74) of Manassas, Virginia passed away peacefully at home with his family on Sunday February 9th, 2025. Born on Christmas day in Washington D.C. to John Baird Mitchell and Joan Mitchell (Williams), John grew up in Huntington, New York, a suburb in Long Island. He later relocated to Northern Virginia in the late 1970’s. He is preceded in death by his sister, Pamela Janet Mitchell and nephews Jonathan (Jon Jon) DiLuciano and James Edward Bennett III. He is survived by his wife Carol Ann Mitchell (Scearce), sister Barbara DiLuciano, daughter Alana Joan Mitchell, multiple nieces and nephews, and his nephew whom he helped raise and considered a son- Jason DiLuciano. Professionally John wore many hats in his lifetime. He began working at his father’s leather goods company Prince Gardener as a boy, went on to own his own landscaping business, and then was a machinist at Fairfax Hospital. Finally, he worked for Prince William County Government for a whopping 31 years, retiring as a Senior Project Manager for Capital Improvement Projects in PWC in 2020. To know John, was to have a friend for life. He sent Christmas cards and called people he knew from as far back as 60 years ago. He always had time for a chat- even with strangers. John always looked forward to his Wednesday ‘Boy’s Nights’ at a local restaurant with his cherished friends Kim and Jeff where they could talk for hours and hours about all manner of things mechanical, sports, current events, and family. John always maintained that his purpose in life was to be a devoted family-man and father, a purpose which his family can attest that he fulfilled fully and with joy. He communicated in his last days that he felt he was a “very lucky man” to have been married to the woman of his dreams for 36 years and that his children made him immeasurably proud.
