Guillermo Higinio Gil-Montero

Guillermo Higinio Gil-Montero passed away peacefully at his home on April 18, 2026, surrounded by his family, following a diagnosis of bladder cancer. A man of remarkable drive and intellectual curiosity, Dr. Gil-Montero lived a full and far-reaching life, marked by achievement and a deep engagement with the world around him. He was born on January 30, 1938, in Córdoba, Argentina. He completed his undergraduate and medical studies at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba before earning his Doctorate in Medicine from the Medizinische Akademie in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he mastered the German language to such a degree that he chose to write his doctoral thesis in German. He went on to complete his surgical internship and urological residency at Washington Hospital Center, including a tour of duty at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. On completing his training, he was recognized with “exceptional distinction” and described by the Director as “the most capable resident we have turned out.” Dr. Gil-Montero returned to Argentina, where he served as Chief of Pediatric Urology at the Hospital de Niños in Córdoba. Amid political unrest and uncertainty in Argentina, he made the decision to build his career in the United States. In 1972, he established his private urology practice in Manassas, Virginia, where he cared for patients until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his career, Dr. Gil-Montero contributed to the advancement of medicine through numerous research publications, with a particular focus on techniques for treating high-risk and localized prostate cancer. He was an active leader in his professional community, serving as President of the Prince William County Medical Society and as President of the Medical Staff at Prince William Hospital in the early 1980s. His commitment to medical service extended beyond the bounds of his practice. He led and participated in medical outreach missions to underserved regions in the Americas, including six trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as well as two missions to northern Argentina after the 2001 economic collapse. Affectionately known by his colleagues in the Dominican Republic as “The Hero of the Mountains,” he performed emergency surgeries and worked tirelessly to improve public health conditions, from providing tens of thousands of pediatric vaccinations to securing essential supplies for under-resourced medical facilities. In an interview, he reflected, “the rewards for helping the people are great. After removing a large tumor from the stomach of a patient, she turned to me and said in her best English, ‘I love you.’” Beyond his professional life, Dr. Gil-Montero was a man of many passions and boundless energy. He loved working with his hands, playing classical guitar, and travelling adventurously. He rode his motorcycle well into his 70s. An avid golfer, he could often be found walking the course with his clubs. He remained lively, curious, and active until the very end. He is survived by his wife, Gay Lynn, of Gainesville; his sisters, Martha and Beatriz; his four children, Alejandra, Carolina, Federico, and Michelle; and his grandchildren, Jack, Jr., Robert, Liam, Julia, Michael, Annika, and Cid; as well as a large extended family in Argentina. A Celebration of Life will take place at Evergreen Country Club, 15900 Berkeley Drive, Haymarket, VA, on Friday, June 19 at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Doctors Without Borders.
