Catharine Mary Sweeney

Catharine Lynskey Sweeney, 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 18 2020 at Haymarket Hospital, near her home in Dominion Valley, Haymarket Va. While Cathy lived most of her life in Smithtown NY, she was a proud Brooklynite, and had the accent to prove it. Cathy was born in Brooklyn on July 1 1941 to William and Catharine Lynskey. After graduating from St. Brendan’s High School, Cathy earned her Associate’s degree in Business Management from Grace Institute. Upon graduation, Cathy worked at Cahill, Gordon, Reindel, and Ohl, a law firm in New York City. Cathy soon thereafter met Lawrence Sweeney, who became her loving husband of 56 years until his passing in 2019. Cathy is survived by her sister Peggy Grady, her children Terry, Jennifer, and Carolyn, nephew Chris, niece Sarah her daughter-in-law Jessica, son-in-law Brian, and the fifteen brightest stars in her sky, grandchildren John Patrick, Eamon, Kaitlyn, Dylan, Eileen, Owen, Kyle, Tara, Erin, Samantha, Shawn, and Emma, grandniece Eva, grandnephew Sam, and great-grandson Kavon. Of course, if you have had the pleasure of knowing Cathy, you would already know all about her family, as her boundless love for them was only matched by her outgoing and gregarious nature. Cathy’s kindness, thoughtfulness, and uncommon decency touched the lives of everyone she met and made her a treasured friend of so many. Cathy’s thoughtfulness was extraordinary. She never forgot an event, both big and small, and would frequently send a treat or a trinket that she thought you might like. We always did. As spot on as the gifts and notes were, they paled in comparison to how it felt to be reminded that you were always present in her mind and how very deeply she loved you. We are deeply saddened by Cathy’s passing, and cherish the time we were fortunate enough to spend with her. We are consoled, however, by knowing that she will be re-united with Larry and that the 58 years since they were married is just the beginning for them. We will celebrate her life at Pierce’s Funeral Home in Manassas, VA on Tuesday October 27th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Her funeral mass will be said at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville on Wednesday October 28th at 1030am.
