Susan Nye Pope
November 14, 1945 - April 7, 2022
Susan Nye Pope (76) passed away surrounded by her family in Manassas, VA. Susan was born to military parents in Monterey, California. She moved to Hawaii, San Francisco, and back to Monterey, where she graduated from Monterey High School. Known by her family as Susie, she grew up singing in the church choir, which fostered her love for music. She married Bill, her loving husband of 48 years in 1965. They moved to Germany where they welcomed their first two daughters, Kathryn and Stephanie. They enjoyed their time abroad, traveling throughout Europe. Returning stateside, they settled in Laurel MD and welcomed a third daughter, Adrienne. They moved again to Oakton, VA where they lived for 25 years and welcomed their fourth daughter, Jocelyn. They chose to retire in Jeffersonton, VA. Sue was one-of-a-kind. She was loving, genuine, forgiving, funny, creative, and so much more. She was a fabulous cook and enjoyed reading cookbooks and culinary magazines. She enjoyed playing cards, watching movies, and reading mystery novels. Bill and Sue enjoyed traveling and visited many places like Alaska, Europe and the Caribbean. They especially loved cruising. Her favorite destination was always Hawaii, which she returned to visit many times. She loved Hawaiian music, folk music, and opera. Sue was a talented singer and played the guitar, ukulele, and dulcimer. Her daughters remember with fondness the hilariously inappropriate songs she sang to them growing up. “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm” is still a favorite. Sue’s grandchildren were blessed by her attention and devotion to each of them. Her family is already missing her laugh and her presence in their lives. Though the vacancy she leaves is heartbreaking for her family, they are rejoicing that she is free from pain and in the presence of the Lord. Susan is predeceased by her husband, William A. Pope II, her parents Bill and Phyllis Nye, her son-in-law R. Bruce Graham, and her beloved niece Lea. Survivors include daughters Kathryn Pope-Graham of Gainesville, VA, Stephanie Nordwall (Gary) of Chantilly, VA, Adrienne Nix (Spencer) of Fredericksburg, VA, and Jocelyn Thomas (Ken) of Warrenton, VA, twelve grandchildren (with several significant others), one great grandchild, three brothers Billy Nye of Monterey CA, Michael Nye (Chris) of Maui HI, and Andrew Nye of Pioneer, CA, one sister-in-law Nancy Pope Michaleski of Jupiter, FL, many great friends, and her sweet dog Lani. A service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 3:30 in the afternoon at Pierce Funeral Home in Manassas, VA. A reception will follow the ceremony at the same location. Susan will be laid to rest with her husband at Culpeper National Cemetery at a later date.
