Michaeleen McGettigan

Michaeleen McGettigan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 16th in Manassas, Virginia. She was 83 years old. Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, Michaeleen was the cherished daughter of Paul Hann and Frances Broderick Hann. She grew up in Coral Gables, just south of Miami, Florida, alongside her siblings, Marc Hann and Judy Chang, where she developed a love for the vibrant culture and warm sands of the area. In 1961, Michaeleen married the love of her life, John McGettigan, on November 26th at Saint Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Miami, Florida. Together, they shared a remarkable 64-year journey, raising two children, David (Vivian) McGettigan and Catherine Marvin, while creating a legacy of love that extended to five grandchildren, Amanda (Jason), Angela (Nick), Donald (Stephanie), Heather (Jake), and David (Ali), 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. Throughout their early years together, Michaeleen and John moved frequently, following John’s military career. Their travels took them to bases across California, Colorado, Texas, Germany, and finally Virginia, where they settled in Woodbridge and later retired to Fredericksburg. Michaeleen embraced each move with grace and used her talents to make every house a home. A lifelong learner, Michaeleen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from George Mason University. She applied her skills as a technical editor for numerous government contractors, including General Dynamics, where she was known for her precision and attention to detail. Michaeleen also gave generously of her time and talents as a volunteer with the Rippon Lodge Garden Club. She found joy in maintaining the gardens and grounds, combining her love of nature and her passion for creating beauty in every space she touched. Michaeleen had a variety of passions and hobbies that brought joy to her life and those around her. She loved gardening, interior design, and playing games such as rummy and mahjong. Her creative pursuits included ceramics, flower arrangement, home decorating, and crafting elegant dinner place settings. Her impeccable attention to detail was evident in everything she did, from her beautifully curated home to the thoughtful way she welcomed guests. Those who knew Michaeleen will remember her for her keen eye for design, her boundless honesty, and her loving, intentional presence. She had a gift for making everyone feel valued and loved, whether through a perfectly arranged table setting, a kind word, or her undivided attention during a conversation. Her warmth, humor, and enduring strength leave an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. As her grandson shared, some of the most cherished memories of Michaeleen were the little moments: enjoying a brownie sundae while watching "House Hunters," savoring a DIY frosty that required endless stirring, or the countless hours spent talking at the kitchen table. These seemingly small interactions reflected the depth of her care and the unique connection she shared with her family. Michaeleen’s honesty, often delivered with gentle humor, was a testament to her love and desire to see those around her flourish. Michaeleen’s family will celebrate her life with a funeral mass at Pierce's Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA, on Tuesday, January 21st. The viewing will begin at 3:00 PM, followed by the service at 4:00 PM.
