It is with overwhelming sadness, our family announces the end of our beloved Mikes prolonged battle with cancer. Mike neither bowed nor broke in his war with cancer. It was Mike’s wish, with shear determination, strength and the grace of God that he was able to give his precious daughter Kaysie to her love Moises on her wedding day, so he can now rest in peace. Mike was born in Cherry Point, NC on a Marine Corps base, and ultimately settled in Manassas, Virginia. A leader from the beginning, he grew from a Boy Scout to a football player for Stonewall Jackson High School while earning the honorable distinction of Eagle Scout along the way. In his over three decades as a dedicated brother in the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 99, he achieved the honor of First-Class Engineer, one of his proudest achievements among many. Mike served as Chief Engineer/Project Manager in such distinguished organizations as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), United States Geological Survey (USGS), US Department of the Interior (DOI), US State Department, Navy Hill, and the AV Bryant Court House, just to name a few. Mike was respected by his colleagues as a teacher, mentor, and brother in the engineering and facilities trade. Mike never assigned a task he would not do himself. Mike was always respectful to his supervisors and went above and beyond anything that was asked on him. Mike’s devotion wasn’t only limited to the workplace. Mike was as a father figure to many kids in the neighborhood who he enjoyed to the fullest, giving them jobs whenever possible, helping them learn a trade, and taking them on family vacations. Most importantly, Mike’s home was always open, warm and secure, full of laughter and light, with every kid knowing that when the weight of the world was upon them, safety & comfort was nearby. Mike is survived by his best friend & loving wife of thirty years, Jan, his adoring daughter, Kaysie Soto, his beloved son-in-law, Moises Soto, devoted Mother Amelia Stearns, dearly loved sisters & his brother, Elaine Preston (Ned Preston), Cathleen Bigelow (Jerry Bigelow), and Frank Cannon (Rebecca Cannon). Mike had many nieces and nephews who he cherished and will always be in his heart. Mike’s friends & loved ones will gather for a funeral mass at 11:15AM on Saturday, August 14th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located at 8213 Linton Hall Road in Gainesville, Va.
