John Phillips,

John Thomas Phillips, Jr., 63, formerly of Baltimore, Md., passed away peacefully in the early morning hours, December 22, 2005. Mr. Phillips was born on September 14, 1942 in Baltimore to the late John T. Phillips, Sr. and Mae C. Phillips. While growing-up in Baltimore, he attended high school at Calvert Hall College and attended the University of Maryland for one year. After college, Mr. Phillips worked for RCA/Whirlpool and was a credit supervisor for Chrysler Credit Corporation. In the 1970's and early 1980's, he owned a gas station in Glen Burnie, Maryland. During this time, Mr. Phillips was the lead plaintiff in a successful antitrust lawsuit against oil companies operating in Maryland. The case, Phillip, et al. v. Crown Central Petroleum, is noted for being the first successful case brought by an individual to uncover a major price-fixing conspiracy. In the mid-1980's, Mr. Phillips and his family moved to Fairfax, Virginia. For the next fifteen years he owned and operated a carpet dying and stain removal business. He invented a carpet stain remover that he used for his business and sold commercially. Personally, John or "Jack" to his family and close friends, was a loyal and loving husband, father, and friend. He had an irreverent sense of humor, enjoyed working on automobiles, and was a sports enthusiast. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judith Karen Phillips; five children, Jacqueline Szczawinski and husband Mark of Hunt Valley, Md; Kimberly McGee and husband Michael of Towson, Md; John T. Phillips, III of Manassas, Va.; Thomas H. Phillips and wife Heather of Centreville, Va.; and Richard E. Phillips and wife Leesa of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, James Phillips and wife Susan of Pompano Beach, Fl.; two sisters, Madonna Schmidt and husband Al of Havre de Grace, Md., and Sharon Petruzielo and husband Frank of Canton, Ga.; four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, VA on Mon., December 26, 2005 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Tues., December 27, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Where a Rosary will be said at 8:00 PM on Tuesday night. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wed., December 28, at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Church St., Manassas, VA at 12 Noon. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a donation to: Catholic Charities, 200 N.
