Virgie Elizabeth Mitchell

As angels often do, Mom has gone to heaven to be with Jesus. Virgie Elizabeth Mitchell left us on May 4, 2023 at 88 years of age. Virgie was a shy, sweet young lady when she courted and wed the handsome and witty Clinton on December 7, 1953 in Fairfax, Virginia. She recalls that day when both mothers of the bride and groom shared the rumble seat in the car all the way to the wedding. They set about building their family and had six children which was the beginning of a beautiful legacy which continues growing today. As birds will will do, the youngest of us left the nest. She walked him to school and that is where she answered her next calling. Virgie became a kindergarten teacher’s aide for the next 27 years. In those years, she taught an entire generation and so her legacy continued to grow. She loved her family more than anything in the world but it was the simple things that brought great pleasure to Virgie. She loved her Boston Red Sox, her Pittsburgh Steelers, blueberry slurpees, apple blossoms, birds of all types, squirrels, bumblebees, and dandelions. She loved the smell and the sound of rain, and of fresh coffee. She loved a soft breeze rustling the shears. She loved Hank Williams Sr, Charlie Pride and Dean Martin. She loved the color purple and Dr. Seuss. She loved Halloween because it was silly and Christmas because it was the time for everyone to come home to hug, laugh, eat, and share. She found happiness wherever she was and shared that treasure with whomever she was with. Virgie is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton, and her daughter, Kathy. She is survived by her sister Neta Abel and five children: Roger, Janet, Karen, Brian, and Danny. She has 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and her constant companion, Tucker. We will receive family and friends at Pierce Funeral Home on May 16th from 9-11 a.m. and the service will begin at 11 o'clock. We will bring her home to Sandridge Cemetery, and will hold a graveside service. She will then be laid to rest beside her husband, Clinton, and all those who have gone before.
