Vicki Ann Walker

Vicki Ann Hatch Walker, 81, died July 15 2026, just shy of her 82nd birthday. She died at her assisted living home, The Vienna Manor in Vienna, Virginia. Although she endured living with the many challenges of dementia, she remained perpetually optimistic and loved visits from family and friends. Vicki was surrounded by family as she passed into the next life. Vicki was born August 9, 1944, in Payson, Utah, to Victor Dee Hatch and Barbara Elizabeth Sanford Hatch. Vicki grew up in Springville, Utah and often told nostalgic stories of her childhood. She graduated from Springville High School in 1962. She had a four year scholarship and went to Utah State University, graduating in 1966 with a degree in elementary education. Vicki married Herbert Laird Walker on September 9, 1965, in the Salt Lake City temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Vicki completed her student teaching as Laird was finishing his final year of college. Their first child, DeeAnn, was born in Logan, Utah. The family continued to grow in Salt Lake City with the addition of Bryan and Kari. Vicki and Laird welcomed Lance, Alicia, Emily, and Trent as they navigated numerous interstate moves including Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, and Idaho before settling in Great Falls, Virginia. Vicki created a nurturing home with each relocation and developed lifelong friendships everywhere she lived. Vicki served tirelessly in her various roles and her productivity and organization seemed almost magical. She was both practical and creative, and for many years sewed all of the family’s clothing. Despite a bustling household Vicki was not one to complain or become overwhelmed; she was never too busy to roll up her sleeves to help one of her children. It was not uncommon for her to pause her busy life to help a child draw block letters on a poster board between juggling active teenager schedules and preparing a home cooked meal. Vicki was the chauffeur and biggest supporter of all seven kids as they grew. She genuinely enjoyed every phase of motherhood from newborns to adults, and her support was unparalleled in the lives of her children. Vicki rarely missed her daily walk and remained active through her senior years. Her varied hobbies included tennis, softball, golf, bowling, crafting, crossword puzzles and other word games, Tetris, sewing and quilting, and reading. She was a dedicated member of a book club that began almost 50 years ago. Vicki lovingly handmade quilts for each of her children and grandchildren—true works of art with love in every stitch. She had a knack for creating memories and traditions. Vicki’s Christmas chocolates were legendary. In later years she always had a variety of homemade cookies ready for her family and other visitors. Vicki was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The joy she derived from her faith in Jesus Christ and His Gospel never wavered. Throughout her life, Vicki held positions of leadership and teaching in her church. She and Laird were able to serve a mission close to home in Louisa County, Virginia. Vicki always believed her most important roles were wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her greatest joy was her family, and this remained especially true as her independence waned. Those who know and love her will dearly miss her. Vicki is survived by her children DeeAnn (Val) Franks, Bryan (Odisa) Walker, Kari (Dan) Schriever, Lance (Kelly) Walker, Alicia Bassett, Emily (Casey) Mueller and Trent Walker; 25 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, with two more on the way; and by her siblings, Carolyn Hatch Morris and Wendell Dee Hatch. Vicki was preceded in death by her husband, H. Laird Walker, her parents Victor Dee and Barbara Hatch, sister Susan Hatch Lauritzen, granddaughter, Clara Jane Bassett, and great granddaughter Holland Grace Smith. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the Vienna Manor staff that provided a warm, loving and safe environment for the last 10 months of Vicki’s life. The family will hold a private graveside service. Vicki will be interred next to Laird at Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, Virginia.
