Vertie Terri Dye

Vertie Terri Dye, age 102 of Manassas, VA died at her residence on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Vertie was born on August 19, 1912 in Council, VA to the late Marion Christopher Barney Hale and Suzannah Hale. She was determined, self-motivated, hardworking, loving, generous and lived life to the fullest. At one time she worked three jobs: at a dairy, a restaurant and a hotel. This enabled her to purchase he own diner, Depot Restaurant in Honaker, VA where she met he husband Clayton. They later moved to the coal fields of West Virginia where they raised their seven children at which time she also worked and retired as a welder from Motorola in Tazewell, VA. Her fighting spirit led her to be a breast cancer survivor at the age of 81. She loved to dance, bowl, play board and card games. She was always dressed in the latest fashion and loved to wear her “bling”. She and Clayton were members of the line dance group call the Happy Hoofers. After retirement she and Clayton spent their time traveling with the Senior Center in Manassas. She was very sociable and loved spending time with family and friends. At 102 she was still attending church at the Assisted Living Facility where she resided. As her granddaughter Jennifer commented, “Vertie taught the women in our family to be strong, independent and to live life with a purpose. She had admirable self-confidence with quick wit and always made us laugh.” She will be missed and loved by all of us and never forgotten. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clayton Dye and a daughter Wanda Barker. Survivors include her children Phyllis Bowling of Manassas, VA, Evelyn Bohannon of Tallmadge, Ohio, Barbara Corbin and husband Rolly of Manassas, VA, Claude Dye and wife Judy of Manassas, VA, Sandra Dean and husband Ronny of Max Meadows, VA and Clayton Dye and wife Carol of Rancho Cucamonga, CA;16 grandchildren: Kim Largen and husband Jim, Todd Bowling and wife Shirley, Mark Bohannon and wife Maria, Michael Bohannon, Stephen Barker and wife Marian, Jennifer McDonald, Tonya Smith and husband Ron, Kelly Corbin, Brandon Dye, Matthew Dye and wife Sandra, Tyler Dye and wife Kate, Geoff Dean and wife Shelly, Heather Dean, Jacob Dean and wife Amanda, Connor Dye and Courtney Dye; 9 great grandchildren: Hannah Carson and husband Glen, Victoria Bohannon, Sofia Bohannon, Catherine Barker, Adam (AJ) McDonald, Alexander McDonald, Taylor Dean, Shane Dean, Madelyn Dean and Noah Dean (Vertie is the oldest member of the Dye family and Noah is the youngest, and there is a 102 year span between them.) The family will receive friends on Friday, January 9, 2015 from 7-9 PM at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 9:00 AM. Interment Stonewall Memory Gardens.
