Dr. Timothy Kyle Sumner

Dr. Timothy Kyle Sumner, 75, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on Saturday, April 4, 2026, after an 18-month battle with neuroendocrine prostate cancer. Tim was born to Kyle Robert and Betty Jo Hash Sumner, in Roanoke, VA, on December 19, 1950. He spent his younger years in Independence, VA, surrounded by his cousins and dear childhood friends that he kept in touch with until his death. He later moved to Cumberland, VA, where he graduated from Cumberland High School in 1969, continuing a pattern of nurturing lifelong friendships. He started his academic career at Virginia Tech as a pre-pharmacy student, and graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1974 from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). During his time in pharmacy school, he met his beloved wife, Jane Slater Sumner, while both worked summer jobs at the Defense General Supply Center. They married in 1972 and settled in Richmond, VA. Tim practiced as a pharmacist for three years, before going back to school at VCU to become a dentist. After graduating with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1981, they moved to Manassas, VA, where Tim began his dental career. He later established a new dental practice in Gainesville, VA. His daughter followed in his footsteps, and continues to operate the dental practice that he founded. Tim was a true Renaissance man of many talents and passions. His interests included investing and trading stocks, where his expertise led him to earn his Series 7 license; golf; country music; travel; wood-working; home improvement projects; Virginia Tech football; and Washington Nationals baseball. His love of golf was so profound, his wife, children, and grandchildren grew to love the game as well. He was a man of great character, conviction, courage, and integrity. Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Kyle and Betty; sister Notra Kylene Sumner; and daughter Erika Susan Sumner. In addition to Jane, his loving wife of 53 years, Tim is survived by his son Jonathan Kyle Sumner (Barbara), of Huntsville, AL; daughter Dr. Lydia Jane Sumner (Dr. Justin Hardison), of Gainesville, VA; brother Anthony Walbert Sumner (Amy), of Richmond, VA; and grandchildren Joshua Kyle, Michael Guidry, and Raegan Everleigh Sumner. He loved and was loved by a multitude of extended family members, and friends who were like family. The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 10, from 6-8 PM at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA. A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 11, at 1 PM at Grace United Methodist Church, 9750 Wellington Road, Manassas, VA, with a reception at the church following the service.
