In Loving Memory: Colonel Stephen A. Hamer (ret) USAF July 7, 1934 – July 5, 2023 It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Col. Stephen A. Hamer (ret) USAF, who passed away on Wednesday, July 5, in Haymarket, VA, just two days shy of his 89th birthday. A devoted husband, father, and distinguished military officer, Col. Hamer's absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. Col. Hamer is survived by his wife of three joyful and inspiring years, Jacquie, his sister Sheila and his sons and their wives Timothy P. and Sherry, Stephen M. and Carol, Kevin A. and Sharon, Brian C. and Noelia, Peter J. and Jennifer, and Kenneth W. and Cindy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Patricia (Patty) and his son Daniel A. Born in Teaneck and raised in Hohokus NJ, Col. Hamer's adult journey began with a 2 year enlistment in the United States Army leading to an appointment to the inaugural class of the United States Air Force Academy of which he was the 50th graduate in 1959. His service to our country lasted over 30 years including two tours in Vietnam, embodying the values of honor, duty, and integrity throughout his military career. A dedicated pilot, his love for aviation ran deep, and he captained numerous military and civilian aircraft. Even after his retirement from active service, Col. Hamer continued to share his passion for flying by working as a commercial pilot for more than a decade. In addition to his military commitments, Col. Hamer was a man of faith. Guided by his strong religious beliefs, he and Patty, his late wife, demonstrated remarkable devotion to their Catholic faith. They tirelessly supported and volunteered at numerous Catholic school and parish events, ensuring their children received a well-rounded education and a strong spiritual foundation. Col. Hamer's memory will forever inspire and shape the lives of generations to come. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering commitment, intelligence, courage, and love. He was not only a dedicated father and husband but also a cherished grandfather of 23 and great-grandfather of 17. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Pierce Funeral Home on Center Street in Manassas, VA, on Thursday, July 13 between 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 14, at 11am at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 23331 Sam Fred Rd, Middleburg, VA 20117. The burial service will take place Tuesday, July 25, at 10am at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, honoring Col. Hamer's dedication to his military service.
