Sondra Jean Yielding

Sondra Jean Yielding, 64, of Gainesville, VA passed away September 16, 2022, in her home surrounded by people who loved her. She was born to the late Billy Isom Faulkner and Barbara Jean Faulkner on February 7, 1958, in Alabama. Sondra graduated from Phil Campbell High School in 1976 and later went on to earn an Associate’s degree in the 80’s. She married Nathan Evans on March 20, 2010. Sondra is survived by her husband, Nathan Evans; two daughters: Melonie Yielding and Ashley Kim; her two sons-in law: Joshua Wedge and Hyojin Kim; her sister: Sara Latricia Faulkner; her stepdaughters: Katherine Havener and Diana Evans; and her four grandchildren: Gabriel Kim (12), Leah Havener (9), Elena Kim (10), and Noah Havener (5). Sondra was preceded in death by her parents Billy Isom Faulkner and Barbara Jean Faulkner as well as her previous husbands, Floyd Cooley and Richard Yielding. Sondra loved to have fun and knew how to make any moment special. Holidays, both large and small, were always vibrant occasions full of delicious food, beautiful decorations, conversation, and games. Her love for sweets knew no bound and she could out-eat anyone in cake on these special occasions. Her infectious laughter was so loud it could be used to locate her from several rooms over spilling her joy onto everyone she was near. Sondra longed for a big family, and each time a grandchild was born, her joy increased. Nothing made her happier than reading, playing, talking, or adventuring with one of her grandchildren. Sondra loved being outdoors. She enjoyed hiking, going for walks, and riding her bicycle. She especially loved to work in the yard. She had flowers both inside the house and out in the yard. Many of her neighbors complimented her on how beautiful her yard looked with all the flowers. Sondra was always heavily involved in church, both in the Baptist Church earlier in her life and after conversion, the Catholic Church. She loved participating in the Prayer and Share group. She often spoke of her love for the Divine Mercy and made it a daily habit to pray both the rosary and the divine mercy chaplet. Her faith helped her through the many trials in her life. Life was never easy for her, in her own words: “As a family we have had more than our fair share of trouble and grief that would break most families. Our faith has a lot to do with it [our resilience]. We just keep plugging away despite all our individual and group challenges.” Despite all the trouble that came her way, Sondra kept moving forward, encouraging everyone along the way. The visitation and funeral will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, VA on Thursday, September 22nd with visitation at 12:30pm and the funeral mass at 1:30pm. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at Pierce Funeral Home in Manassas, VA on Friday, September 23rd at 6:00pm. Inurnment will be held privately with the family at a later date.
