Shirley Simmons Wilson

Shirley Simmons Wilson, 80, of Manassas, VA, passed away on July 23, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Shirley was born on January 24th, 1944, to John Andrew and Ruby May Roy Simmons in Lanesville, WV. She attended one-room Lanesville White School for grades 1 through 8. She graduated from Mountaineer High School in 1963. She left the mountains of West Virginia for Arlington, Virginia immediately after high school. She got a job with C & P Telephone Co., which became Bell Atlantic Telephone Co., and then Verizon Telephone Co., retiring after 32 ½ years. Many years were then spent catering to her prized yard and flower gardens and chasing after her grandchildren. In late 1964, she met Daniel E. Wilson of Davis, West Virginia and they wed on July 17,1965. Dan was her best friend and the love of her life. They lived in Arlington, Virginia, Falls Church, Virginia, and finally settled in Manassas, Virginia. They had 3 children, Ron, Michelle, and Missy. Shirley was a fiercely dedicated mom to all her children. Family came first and was above all else to Shirley, a value she instilled in all those around her. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill. Shirley was passionate about her grandchildren, but when she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and the laughter of her grandchildren, she could be found working in her backyard doing some form of yard work. We will miss her greatly. She was baptized into the Catholic faith with close family supporting her on July 11, 2020, after decades of practicing the faith. She could not have been happier, stating it was one of the best days of her life. Shirley was predeceased by John Simmons (father), Ruby Simmons (mother), Ronald Roy (brother), Rosilea Vance (sister), and Tommy Simmons (brother). She is survived by her husband, Dan, her son Ron (Lisa) Simmons, Michelle (Jesse) Zappia, and Missy (Nick) Long; her five grandchildren Josh, Michael, Nate, Dylan, and Jenna; her sister Norma Jean (Mark) Toth, sister-in-law Shirley Simmons, and several nieces and nephews. The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to Pierce Funeral Home. There will be a viewing at Pierce Funeral Home on Thursday August 1,2024 from 6-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints Catholic Church on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Shirley’s name to the Alzheimer's Association.
