In Loving Memory of Russell Lee Thomas “Rusty” January 25, 1980 – February 27, 2026 Russell Lee Thomas, 46, of Manassas, Virginia, passed away leaving behind a family who adored him and a community that will deeply feel his absence. Born on January 25, 1980, Rusty brought strength, humor, and heart into the world from the very beginning. He was a man who loved fiercely and lived fully, never missing an opportunity to make the people around him laugh or feel protected. His presence was larger than life, but it was his tenderness with those he loved most that truly defined him. Rusty dedicated his career to automotive body work and refinishing, where he built a reputation for his talent, precision, and unmatched work ethic. Painting cars wasn’t just a job to him — it was an art form. He took immense pride in transforming vehicles with his skill and attention to detail, often stepping back to admire the flawless shine of a freshly finished paint job. Friends and family knew that when Rusty worked on a car, it would be done right. Beyond his work, Rusty had a deep love for music. It was the soundtrack to his life — always playing in the background of family gatherings, long drives, and moments of reflection. He especially loved attending music festivals whenever he had the chance, surrounding himself with friends and family, soaking in the energy, the laughter, and the shared memories. Those festival days were some of his happiest — filled with good company, loud music, and the freedom to simply enjoy the moment. Music connected him to the people he loved, and those memories will forever echo in their hearts. Above all else, Rusty was a devoted father. His pride and joy were his three children: Whitney Therese McCumbee, lovingly known as “Roo,” Hailee Anne Thomas, affectionately called “Skeet,” and his son, Ayden Blain Thomas, known as “Monk.” Each of them carried a special piece of his heart. He cherished being their dad — guiding them, teasing them, protecting them, and loving them in a way only he could. One of Rusty’s greatest joys was becoming a grandfather to his beloved grandson, Adrian Austin McCumbee, affectionately called “Double A.” The bond they shared brought Rusty immense happiness. He embraced his role as Papa with pride, and the love he had for his grandson was evident to everyone who saw them together. Rusty was a loving son to his mother, Sue Hopkins, and was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Thomas and step-father, Jeffrey Hopkins. Rusty was the proud brother to his sister, Katie Jamieson, and his brother, Joe Thomas. He shared a special bond with his nephews - Josh, Orion, Connor, and Travis - each of whom he cared for deeply. Though his time here was far too short, the impact Rusty made in 46 years will last a lifetime. He leaves behind not only cherished memories, but a legacy of resilience, humor, craftsmanship, devotion, music, and deep, unconditional love. His children, grandson, mother, siblings, nephews, and all who loved him will carry his spirit forward. In their strength, their laughter, and in every song that plays and every festival gathering shared, Rusty lives on. He will be forever missed, forever loved, and forever remembered.
