Ruby Herndon

Ruby Marie Herndon 1928-2010 "Absent from the body, present with the Lord" RUBY MARIE SKINNER HERNDON, age 81, passed away in her Haymarket home Sunday, July 25, 2010 with family by her side. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Horace Eugene Herndon, Sr. They are both now in the loving arms of Jesus and will continue their life together for eternity. Ruby was born July 28, 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Elvin and Cilla Mae Skinner. Ruby was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a hard worker, devoted to the needs of her family. She will be remembered always for the beautiful smile on her face, her laugh, and her curly blond hair. Despite great physical pain and suffering, she never complained. She was kind to everyone she met and loved to say "Smile, God Loves You". Ruby was a wonderful wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She was very involved with her children and grandchildren. She never missed a ballgame, dance recital, or music recital. She was born and raised in Georgia. At the age of 17, she met the love of her life, Horace. After a short and unique romance, they married on October 24, 1945. She moved with him to Virginia, where they started their life together. Ruby was a very special woman, who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include four sons, Horace E. Herndon, Jr. and wife Joy of Warrenton, VA; Jerry H. Herndon and wife Ann of Manassas, VA; Loyad G. Herndon and wife Carolyn of Nokesville, VA and George L. Herndon and wife Patty of Culpeper, VA; two daughters, Joyce B. Compton and husband Claude of Aldie, VA and Karen M. Barrett and husband Michael of Haymarket, VA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Tom Compton, Tim Compton, Jill Compton, Trey Compton, Nathaniel Barrett, Zachary Barrett, Michala Barrett, Trevor Herndon, Katie Herndon, Tara Herndon, Matt Heisler and Jason Heisler and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Jewell Faulkner of Georgia; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Skinner of Georgia and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Elton, Loyad, Hugh, George and Leland and two sisters, Nell and Mae. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas. A second visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Victory Baptist Church, 12650 Aden Road, Nokesville, Virginia where services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday with Pastor Clinton E. Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Cannon Branch Cemetery, Manassas, Va. The family requests expressions of sympathy to be made in the form of contributions to the Arthritis Foundation in memory of Ruby M.
