Robert Munn,

Robert (Bob) John Munn, Jr. , 78, retired Captain and Naval Aviator, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012, at Prince William Hospital in Manassas. Since his retirement in 1986, he has resided in Northern Virginia. Bob was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Robert and Mabel Munn, and as a young child, moved to Dallas, Texas. He attended Highland Park High School in Dallas, and in 1956 graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in Petroleum Engineering, where he met and married his wife, Sue Flippen. Upon graduation, Bob was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and attended flight school where he earned his aviator wings in 1957. His Navy career took him to duty stations in Kodiak, Alaska; Coronado, California; Whidbey Island; Washington; Patuxent River, Maryland; Gaeta, Italy; and the Pentagon. Bob also graduated from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in 1964 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. Bob flew a range of carrier-based aircraft on numerous deployments, including tours aboard the USS Kearsage, USS Bennington, USS Kitty Hawk, and the USS Enterprise. He flew multiple tours in Vietnam, piloting the KA-3, and subsequently flew the S-2 aircraft where he ultimately became the Commanding Officer of Anti-submarine Squadron VS-37. Bob subsequently assumed leadership roles at the Pentagon, supporting aircraft carrier modernization programs and the development of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System. After retiring from the Navy, Bob worked for Calspan Corporation on their aviation flight testing efforts. During his Navy career, Bob was awarded a number of decorations including the Legion of Merit, the Air Medal, the Navy Commendation, the Vietnam Air Gallantry Cross and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation. Bob brightened the lives of those around him with his unique sense of humor. In addition to his love of flying, Bob enjoyed driving and restoring classic cars. Capt. Munn is survived by his wife Sue Munn, son Michael John Munn and wife Susan of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter Suzanne Revell and husband Jeff Revell of Manassas, VA; and six grandchildren: Veronica Munn, Daphne Munn, Matthew Revell, Alex Revell, Elizabeth Revell and Isabelle Revell. A final honors ceremony will be conducted at the Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, October 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, www.pcf.org
