Richard "Dick" Clough

On Sunday, November 6th, 2022, Richard “Dick” Clough, loving husband, and father passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 71. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Darla (Fairfax) Clough, his brother Tom Clough, and his wife Andrea (their children Tom, Bill and Maria) and his brother Joe Clough, his daughters Teresa (Clough) Franklin and Pamela (Clough) Greer, stepsons Michael and Dwayne Dodson, and grandchildren Taylor Franklin, Kyle Greer, Vivian Greer and Emily Greer, Elise Poole, Michaela Dodson (and her sister Clarke), Kaylee Dodson and Eli Dodson. It is important to point out the innumerable “family members, nieces and nephews” added along the way. The bond of family was incredibly important to Dick. A blood relationship was not a requirement to be considered his family. Dick was born on July 24, 1951, in Claremont, New Hampshire to Harold Eugene Clough and Lucilla (Locke) Clough. He attended Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Claremont from 1957-1969. As a child he was a member of the band for the Cavaliers. He developed his love for music and guitar at a young age. He enjoyed fishing and riding his bike with neighborhood children. Growing up in poverty presented challenges, which he ultimately overcame. Perhaps coming from humble roots developed him into the stoic man who would always, always, lend a helping hand. Dick served our country as a Morse Code Intercept Operator during the Vietnam War. When he returned from Vietnam, he was stationed at Vint Hill Army Base, once known as “The Listening Post” in Fauquier County, Virginia. Combining his military skills and his college education from Northern Virginia Community College, he launched a career nearby at IBM in Manassas, Virginia. He served that company for nearly five decades through many seasons and changes. The friendships born and cultivated during his time there simply cannot be measured, counted, or forgotten. He was eternally grateful for those relationships. He had a lifelong passion for all things outdoors. He volunteered for many years for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. He was always respectful of game law and ever thankful to friends who trusted him enough to hunt their properties. He was a hunter, fisherman, painter, mechanic, locksmith, carpenter, singer, guitar player, jack of all trades, a quintessential man. He was known by some as “MacGyver” “Moses” and “Mountain Man”. But more than any other name, the one he cherished most, was “Dad”.
