Raymond Roosevelt Shifflett

Raymond R. Shifflett of Sterling, VA passed away on Friday, November 09, 2018 of multiple organ failure. He was a life-long resident of the Sterling area and an original 1960 homeowner of Broad Run Farms. He is survived by his wife, Addie. Their daughter Amy (Daniel) Eno and his special buddy, Grandson Zander Eno of Sterling, VA. Two children from a prior marriage Cathy (Patrick) Dzierla of Walkerton, Indiana and Steven Shifflett of Cochran, Georgia. In addition to several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Helen Seale of Great Falls, Virginia; Annie Sorrell of Dayton, Virginia; Mary Powell of Garrisonville, Virginia; Betty Powell of Lovettsville, Virginia; and Joanie Ross of Warrenton, Virginia. Also survived by two brothers, Donald of Fort Valley, Virginia and Charles of Clearbrook, Virginia. He was predeceased by his parents Jesse & Nellie Shifflett, his brothers Junior, Gene, Buddy and Mickey and his sister Shirley. In his youth, he played along the banks of the Broad Run with his brothers setting fish snares. He went to several small Ashburn and Sterling country schools. As a young boy he worked as a farm hand filling silos, making hay and other farm chores. He served for two years in the Army with the 20th Signal Battalion as a lineman in Mannheim Germany in 1953-1955. When he returned home, he worked as a truck driver hauling lime. He was employed by H.O. Engen of Vienna for seventeen years hauling items such as Christmas trees out of Vermont, block and brick out of York, PA, and tombstones to Arlington Cemetery. In 1971, he went to work as a mechanic for Trowbridge Steel Company. For 24 years, he worked on tractor trailer trucks and handled all building, equipment, and truck maintenance. While there he built a shear line 60 feet long for cutting reinforced steel complete with rollers, stops and air cylinders. After retiring, he enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden--producing more than enough for his family and giving vegetables away to neighbors and friends. He took meticulous care of his yard and felt great pride in the way his home looked. Over his lifetime he loved to hunt, fish and travel. He enjoyed auctions, flea markets, bluegrass music and good food. Family was everything to him. There wasn’t a lazy bone in his body always doing a job and doing it right. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA where a reception will be held immediately after services at the Pierce Funeral Home Hall. A funeral procession will be leaving at 1:30 PM for interment at Stonewall Memory Gardens.
