Phillip Cato Scheider

Phillip Cato Scheider born November 1, 1952 passed away on January 15, 2020, son of the late Charles Franklin Scheider III and Sara Josephine. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Nancy Stoertz Scheider, Sons Jonathan Howard Scheider and Christopher Phillip Scheider (Kelly) and three grandchildren and Daughter Diana May Haines(Christopher) and his siblings Charles Franklin Scheider IV, Sara Blakewood Norment, Eric Hughes Scheider and Lili Marlene Scheider and other family and friends. Phil was born in Arlington, VA and grew up with his family in Annendale, VA. He spent many of his childhood years exploring the woods near his home for many hours, harboring his love for the outdoors. He raised pigeons for a short time which began his kindness and love towards animals. He always exhibited a strong work ethic beginning at about 12 years old he started delivering newspapers, where he also got his coin collecting hobby. He always had a part time job trying to gain independence. In his teen years he was able to combine the outdoors and working by being a lifeguard for several summers. Other hobbies including caving, tae kwon do, and photography for the yearbook filled his time. He met Nancy Stoertz at Falls Church High School at the end of his senior year. He graduated in 1971 and went to Virginia Tech and was part of their ROTC Corps of Cadet and earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1975 from there he went on to the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry where he received his Doctorate of Dental Science in 1979. He and Nancy married on August 2, 1975. They moved to Richmond together while he studied Dentistry. He then served as an Army Dentist stationed in Germany and Aberdeen, MD. While in Germany he and Nancy traveled throughout Europe enjoying activities from skiing in the Alps to sun-bathing on the French Riviera. After leaving military service, he opened his solo-practice in Manassas, VA(1984) where he practiced until his retirement 31 years later. He tried to always be a fair employer and even harder to give his patients the care they needed. He often used humor to put his patients at ease and shared his photography on the walls and ceilings. During this time he and Nancy raised their three children and was active in the Jay Cees, Boy Scout Leadership of troop 1185 and was a founding member of the Manassas Dental Study Club. He continued to enjoy many outdoor activities such as, hiking, gardening, skiing and scuba diving and shared them with his children. He worked with his hands outside of his career as well by making/welding jewelry and wood working. Phil worked hard to provide for his children and supported their multiple activities and interests. He went on numerous camping trips with his sons while in Boy Scouts. Phil took the boys a few times on Boy Scout High Adventure programs. He participated in one with Jonathan to a camping trip at LenHok’sin Goshen, VA and Chris to Florida National High Adventure Seabase in the Keys where they spent the week fishing and snorkeling. He was always keen on participating in Father-Daughter Girls Scout Dances or dressing up as a matching chaperone on Halloween for Diana. He always doted on the family corgis. He loved making balloon animals and lots of silly faces for his grandchildren to enjoy. One of the last things he was able to accomplish was walking his only daughter down the aisle at her wedding to Christopher Haines this past November in Raleigh, NC. Over the past year he struggled with many health issues, but Phil passed away after a short battle with lung cancer. He fought hard his last few months and was visited by many family and friends. Phil made an impact on many lives and will be missed. He is now at rest, walking again in the woods with corgis, Rocky, Bella and Roxy nipping at his heels.
