Paul Edward Storing

Paul Edward Storing, 87, of Manassas, Virginia, died peacefully with his family by his side on February 8, 2017 at Westminster in Lake Ridge, Virginia. Paul was born on October 24, 1929 in Ames, Iowa to the late James Alvin and Edith Nora Ryg Storing. The family moved to Hamilton, New York, where he spent most of his youth. He graduated from Allegheny College in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History with Phi Beta Kappa Honors. During his time at Allegheny, Paul was President of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and studied abroad at the University of Oslo. In 1953, Paul received a Master of Arts in History with honors from Colgate University. He continued on to the University of Wisconsin for post graduate studies and worked as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Oslo. During the Korean War, Paul served as a Corporal in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 in Dreux, France. In 1960, Paul married Polly Zimmermann (Morris) and together they raised two daughters, Mimi and Felice. Paul was a loving father and devoted to his family. He served as a Foreign Service Officer in the Department of State for 25 years. He lived and worked abroad in Mexico, Norway, and Sweden when their children were young and then settled in Lake Ridge, Virginia. After retiring from the Foreign Service, Paul was a Special Assistant for 19 years with the International Boundary and Water Commission for the United States and Mexico. In his more recent years, Paul moved to Old Town Manassas where he became known as “The Mayor” or “The Godfather.” He volunteered for the Manassas Historic Association for several years and enjoyed his monthly book club, memoirs writers’ group, Manassas Ballet Theatre, “Tuesday Dinner Group” and “Friday Night Ladies” (of which he became an honorary member.) You could often find Paul dancing on Battle Street or karaoke singing “A Man of Constant Sorrow” with his friends in Philadelphia Tavern. He even wrote his own version of the song “I am NOT a Man of Constant Sorrow.” He cherished his friends and had many. Paul is predeceased by his parents; his brother Herbert James Storing; sister-in-law Kathryn Rourke Storing; and brother-in-law Edward Maybeck. Paul is survived by his two daughters: Mimi Storing Harlan and her husband Scott Harlan of The Woodlands, TX, and Felice Storing Kite and her husband John Kite of Lake Ridge, VA. He is also survived by one sister, Rev. Susan Storing Maybeck of Pittsford, NY; four grandchildren: Kirsti Harlan, Davis Harlan, Kailey Kite, and Lexi Kite; six nieces and nephews: Susan Benfield, Eric Storing, Sarah Storing, Rev. Cynthia Maybeck, Megan Emmett, and Steve Maybeck; his former wife Polly Morris; and his loving partner Sue Clairmonte. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 10 a.m. to noon at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA. A private service and Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.
