Paul Burns Ebert

Paul Burns Ebert, long-time Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince William County passed away on June 23, 2026. He was the son of the late Paul R. and Margaret Ebert. Paul could be described with a Latin phrase sometimes used in law, sui generis, meaning “unique, one-of-kind”. Born September 23, 1937 in Roanoke, Virginia his family moved to Falls Church, Virginia when he was a child. He earned a business degree in 1959 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (now known as Virginia Tech) and later received his law degree from George Washington University while attending classes at night and working during the day. In 1967, Paul was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney. He served the residents of Prince William County, and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park for 52 years until his retirement in 2019. Well-known for the successful prosecution of the D.C. Sniper, he also prosecuted a myriad of lesser-known cases, recognizing the importance of justice to every victim of a crime. Paul always attributed his success to his dedicated assistants and staff. He also brought his life experience to bear in his work. When a zealous young prosecutor suggested adding additional charges on a case, his response was “yeah, but is that fair?” Fairness was a hallmark of his philosophy. An accomplished fisherman and hunter, he fished and hunted all over the world, but his favorite place to spend time was at his cottage on the Northern Neck of Virginia and fishing on his beloved boat, the Katherine Jeanene. Predeceased by his wife, Priscilla, and his brother, Jim, Paul is survived by his children, Jeanene Ebert, Pete Ebert (Lori), Kathy Gravett (Guy), his granddaughters, Priscilla, Noelle and Bethany and step-grandchildren, Victoria, Brandon and Joshua, and his long-time companion, Mary. He is also survived by his brother, John (Sunny), Little El, as well as nephews, nieces and cousins. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many team members and Paul’s tablemates and friends at The Wellington at Lake Manassas for their care and friendship, as well as his caregiver, Mohamed Sesay. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, Virginia. Mourn not that such a man died; rather, rejoice that such a man lived. We were lucky to know him.
