Mildred Droste

MILDRED "MILLIE"ANNE DROSTE, age 85 of Locust Grove, Virginia died peacefully in her sleep Monday, August 4, 2008 at Manassas Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Ronceverte, West Virginia on Groundhog's Day, February 2, 1923, Millie was the eldest daughter of Fred and Pearl Droste. Millie taught physical education at Virginia Intermont College, Mary Baldwin College, and Mary Washington College; the later at which she stayed for 31 years retiring with the rank of Professor Emeritus. Along her career path, she took on new challenges as Assistant Dean of Students at Mary Washington in 1967. The following year, she was appointed Dean of Students and held that position until 1975. Millie will be remembered as a passionate golfer and holder of numerous club championships. She was a dedicated Emergency Medical Technician who volunteered many hours on two Rescue Squads. In addition, Millie participated in various activities and service boards at Lake of the Woods where she resided. She will be greatly missed by family and friends as she smiles down from the fairways in heaven. She is survived by her sister and dearest friend, Martha Gillum and husband, Marvin of Manassas, Virginia; three loving nieces / "daughters", Cindy Coiner and husband Bill of Midlothian, Virginia; Debby Milligan and husband Dick, and Melanie Przybocki and husband Dave all of Manassas, Virginia. Their children were like grandchildren to Millie; Caroline and Meredith Milligan, Cara and Cory Clayton, Rob Dufour, and Mollie Przybocki. Millie is also survived by her youngest sister, Sally Brown and husband Jim of Williamsburg, West Virginia and their children Carolyn Stephens and husband Pete, Patty Sterner, and Julia Silber and husband Doug. A celebration of Millie's life will take place on Saturday, August 23 at 1:00 P.M. at the Lake of the Woods Church in Locust Grove, Virginia. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, 104 Lakeview Parkway, Locust Grove, Virginia 22508 in memory of Millie Droste.
