Michael Dale Carman

Michael Dale Carman of Gainseville, VA passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at INOVA Alexandria Hospital. Michael was born on March 10, 1943 at Sibley Hospital to Sergius Benjamin and Angela Carman. Michael attended both Gonzaga and Blair High Schools. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves. He worked for the federal government in Crystal City for many years before his retirement, but he is best known for being a substitute teacher in Prince George's County Maryland. Michael loved reading, especially about history, Latin and Math. He could often be found reading a math book and trying to solve complicated problems, reading the encyclopedia, history or Latin books where he would remember Latin phrases and quote them to you. If you ever attended one of his classes when he was substituting, regardless the subject matter, he would write Latin phrases on the black board and also diagram sentences. When not reading, Michael enjoyed the Washington Redskins and watching old movies with his favorite actors Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. A few of his favorite movies include: The Cincinnati Kid and Bullitt with Steve McQueen, East of Eden with James Dean, Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman, The African Queen, Casablanca, Key Largo and Sabrina with Humphrey Bogart. A few honorable mentions go to: Risky Business with Tom Cruise, The Godfather and Heat with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Goodfellas with Robert De Niro, Full Metal Jacket, The Good The Bad The Ugly and Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood, Coming to America with Eddie Murphy and Big with Tom Hanks. Michael also loved to eat out! Those who knew him well would often get a random call saying "Hey, let's get something to eat!" Red Lobster and their cheddar biscuits were among his favorites as well as crispy cream donuts, especially when the red light was on. But his all time favorite meal was steak, baked potato and a salad with blue cheese dressing and a hot fudge cake sundae for dessert. Michael is survived by his children Michael Shawn Carman, Kia Anderson and Sergius Stephone Carman; grandchildren Ricco Carman, Kortiez Carman, Kalaya Carman, Kaliyah Carman, Jacqueline Williams and Foziah Brielle Carman; brother Sergius Carman; nephews Anthony Carman, Angelo Carman and Michael Carman and nieces Angela Carman Mock, Deborah Carman Snow and Denise Carman Lord. Michael is predeceased by his brother John Carman and grandson Lamar Lee-Kane, Jr. Relatives and friends may call at Pierce Funeral Home on Saturday, September 26, 2020 from 12 Noon until time of service at 1 PM.
