Julia Ann Hulshizer

Julia Ann Hulshizer Julie passed away peacefully August 28, 2023 in Manassas, Virginia and returned to her heavenly home after 88 years as the Matriarch of the Virginia Hulshizers. Julie was born on August 10, 1935 to Raphael C. Wendling (Pharmacist) and Vivina M. (Compton) Wendling (Registered Nurse) in Atchison, Kansas and was the oldest of two children; she is survived by her brother Raphael J. (Bud) Wendling. Julie attended Mt. Saint Scholastica in Atchison through high school, then attended “The Mount” (same school) one year for college. Julie went to work at the Grand Lake Lodge in Colorado in 1952 with cousins Joan & Jerry Hagen, where she met R. Dale Hulshizer from Des Moines. Julie married Dale on October 9, 1954 and moved from Des Moines to Colorado Springs, then later to Denver. They moved back and forth between the DC area and Colorado and settled down in 1969 at Pinewood Lake in Alexandria. Julie was preceded in death by Dale, he passed away from complications from surgery from esophagus cancer surgery and as a quadriplegic from a car accident on August 30, 1988. Julie is survived by her four children: Rebecca Jo (Hulshizer) Bruce, Ronald Dale Hulshizer, Jr., Daniel Joseph Hulshizer, and Ann Marie (Hulshizer) Wernecke. The family often was found beach camping at Cape Henelopen, Delaware; the girls would go to the beach, the boys would fish from the pier in the Delaware Bay and catch spot, blowfish and flounder. Many a campfire would find Becky playing the guitar and Hulshizers singing camp songs. Julie and Dale also supported their children’s many activities: Swim Team, Wrestling, Football, Gymnastics, Cheerleading, and school plays. Julie was a real estate broker for many years after working at the Library of Congress. Julie moved to the country and lived in Rixeyville Virginia on a horse farm with her horse Colleen. A number of Julie’s ten grandchildren were able to go to the “farm” and ride Colleen and some of the other horses. Julie is survived by her ten grandchildren: the New York Bruces, Zach Bruce, Sam Bruce, Rachael Bruce, Eliza Bruce; the Oklahoma Hulshizers, Eric Hulshizer. Megan Hulshizer Crowdis; and the Virginia Werneckes, Heather Wernecke, Morgan (Wernecke) Henson, Karl Wernecke, and Danno Wernecke. Julie was active gardening at the farm, and later moved to Bristow to live with the Virginia Werneckes and became a Master Gardener. The Master Gardeners had their gardens at St. Benedict Monastery and Linton Hall Catholic School. Julie loved to laugh with family and enjoyed the many activities of her children and grand children. She also loved to be a trickster, replacing candidate signs of her candidate with those of her ornery son-in-law who supported the opposing candidate. Julie is remembered as a loving mother and Grandma Julie to the grandkids and will be missed greatly.
