John J. Tupes

John J Tupes, 81, husband of Judy W Tupes of Gainesville, Va passed away at home on Sunday, April 21, 2024, after battling cancer for several years. Born in Morgantown, W. Va, he was a son of the late Helen and Joseph Tupes. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two younger brothers, Tom Tupes and Robert Tupes, both of Morgantown, W. Va. John (“Junior”) graduated from Morgantown High School where he was a star athlete in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He continued to play baseball at West Virginia University until moving to the Washington DC area where he completed his education at the Benjamin Franklin University School of Accountancy. John started his career as an internal auditor at Laborers International Union of North America in 1969 and worked there for 53 years, retiring in December of 2022. He loved his job, traveling in both the US and Canada auditing the various locals and district councils. His friendly, outgoing personality endeared him to everyone, often even to those he was auditing. He was good at putting people at ease. Throughout his life, John always found time to pursue his sports. He loved basketball and played recreationally well into his 30’s and 40’s. Later he concentrated on tennis and skiing, both of which he shared enthusiastically with his wife. His love of travel took him to countless places throughout the US and the world. He and his wife traveled with friends for many years, skiing throughout Europe, cruising in the Caribbean, the Baltic, and around South America, and traveling to Greece, Italy, France, and Argentina. Most importantly, John was a devoted and proud father, supporting his son and daughter in all of their endeavors and providing opportunities for them to pursue their interests and passions. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son, Brian K Tupes of Roanoke, Va, his daughter, Shannon N Tupes of Vinton, Va., and their mother, Victoria Radford, a brother, Charles E. Tupes (Sandra) of Marvin, NC, and three nieces, Karen Hailey (Kelly) of Matthew, NC, Carla Leo (Danny) of Morgantown, W. Va. and Tiffany Seum (Brandon) of Morgantown W. Va. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BCAN (Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network).
