Jerome Matthew Wingate

Jerome Matthew Wingate of Manassas, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 1, 2026. Jerome was born on February 14, 1962, in Fairfax, Virginia, to Doreen Wingate and Otmous Wingate (James Frye). He was raised in Fairfax County and the surrounding areas, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep sense of family. In 1975, he met the love of his life, Ernestine, and together they built a life rooted in love, marriage, and family. Jerome was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family. He held various jobs throughout the years, including serving with Fairfax County Public Schools and as a groundsman for Georgetown South for many years. Beyond his regular responsibilities, Jerome was known for taking on side jobs—if you knew him, you knew he stayed busy. Jerome will be remembered as a loving and nurturing man—a true provider and protector. He was strong, humorous, generous, and outgoing, with a spirit that could light up any room. He had a passion for skating and was known for his smooth moves and joyful presence. More than anything, Jerome had a heart for people—he looked out for others and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. His love for his family was deep and unwavering, and his legacy will forever live on through them. Jerome’s life was a testament to love, strength, and faith. Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created and the love he gave will remain in our hearts forever. Jerome was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished his family deeply. He is survived by his loving wife, Ernestine Wingate; his children, Lashea (John) Contreras, Chanelle Wallace (Michael Bertrand), Jerome Wallace, Melissa Lovett, and Troy (April) Lovett; and his bonus daughter, Rochelle James. He will be fondly remembered by his beloved grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa”: Trayvon, Tierek, Kimani, John, Jerome, Kiera, Keon, Troy Jr., Brooklynn, Lynndsey, James, Xzavior, RJ, and Aniyah; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren. Jerome is also survived by his siblings, Ronald Frye, Evelyn Short, Brenda Freeman, Greg Wingate, Pamela (Ulysses) Squirewell, and Tony (Kim) Wingate; along with a host of aunts, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doreen Wingate and Otmous Wingate (James Frye); brothers Warren Frye and Vernell Wingate; sisters Maureen Kankam and Kim Wingate; nephew Jermaine Frye; son Javone Wallace; and grandson Jaden Wallace.
