Janet Davenport Gray

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our mother, Janet Gray, who left us on February 11th after living a long and beautiful life. Janet was an incredible mother, always there when we needed her, offering her love and support. She also touched the lives of so many others who felt her warmth and generosity by making them feel important with a sincere desire to better know them and their families. Born in Morristown, NJ, Janet graduated from Morristown High School in 1942 and soon after became engaged to aviation cadet Robert J Gray. Janet was a devoted Mother, who beautifully raised three children, Doraine, Karen, and Bob Jr for decades as the family travelled the globe, moving, managing the household, while loving and supporting her Navy husband. Mom was a true animal lover and rescued many animals over the years. Our home was always filled with the pitter-patter of paws and portraits including Janet and her beloved dogs. Mom’s nurturing spirit extended to both her children and her furry companions. Janet was a cherished member of all the communities she lived in, active both volunteering and in her local church. Her beautiful singing could be heard not just at church, but throughout each day enriching our lives with the joy of music. Mom’s love of travel, and curiosity about other cultures, made her well suited to life as a military spouse. In the 1970’s she was a fashionista extraordinaire while dressing ladies in the trendy JP Allens clothing sales in Atlanta, GA. While living in Lynchburg VA, Janet served as an Occupational Therapist at the Lynchburg Training School and Hospital. Her working career also included Office Manager for three specialty clinics in Lynchburg, Sunnyside WA, and Seattle. She was a deacon at the Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church in Bremerton, WA for many years and hosted many fun and colorful events for members. Janet's life was grounded by family, from her early life until her death, and her family of three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all loved and admired Janet for her legacy of love, kindness, and strength. She taught us well that success is measured, not by wealth or awards, but by family core values including honesty and supporting those in need. Our lives have, and will continue to be, truly enriched with the values that taught by this remarkable woman.
