Harinder Kaur Hansra 03.03.1944 – 04.23.2024 Harinder Kaur Hansra passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Harinder Kaur was born in the village of Gurjarwal in Punjab, India. Her childhood family included parents, 1 brother, and 4 sisters. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Punjab University. In 1968, she married Surrindar Singh and they settled in Dallas, TX. The family moved to Connecticut in 1969, to Maryland in 1975, and to Virginia in 1981. She worked for the U.S. Federal Government as a computer programmer for 27 years, retiring in 2006. Harinder Kaur embraced the Sikh principles of meditation on God’s name, hard work, and community service. She was a sevadaar to the greater DC Sikh community and partnered with her late-husband as a founding member to several local Gurdwaras. As she developed her own spirituality, Harinder Kaur devoted herself to the mediation practice of Simran. Her character was honest, simple, strong, beautiful, and full of integrity. Harinder was an amazing cook, especially when it came to Punjabi food. Her go-to take out was always Chinese food. Mom’s football allegiance was more neutral between her husband’s Dallas Cowboys and childrens’ Washington Commanders, but recently she was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. She also loved to spend time outside in the garden and take walks around the neighborhood. Harinder Kaur Hansra was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and aunt. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Surrindar Singh Hansra. She is survived by son Chet, daughter Harpreet, siblings Harjit Kaur, Paramjit Singh, Gurmail Kaur, Malkiat Kaur & many loving nieces and nephews.
