Dianne Lee Hertz

Dianne Lee Hertz, 82, of Manassas, VA, passed away on July 5, 2026. Dianne was born November 11, 1943, in Willits, CA, to Edith and Ray Hildebrand. Much younger than her sister and brother (Edith and Bert) Dianne had a special relationship with her father who worked at the sawmill in the redwood forests. She remembered logs as big as trucks being driven down Highway 101. At 16, she met the love of her life, Norman Hertz in church on June 14, 1959. The two eloped to Carson City while she was a senior in high school in December 1961. She lived in San Francisco while Norman was in the Army, then the two drove to Oklahoma City, where they lived and worked near Norman’s siblings. They started their family after 10 years of marriage and after the birth of their second son, they moved to Waco, Texas, so that Norman could study psychology at Baylor University. After that, they moved to Memphis, where Norman completed a PhD in psychology at Memphis State. All these years, Dianne worked as an administrator for various businesses to support the family and was a homemaker in the mornings and evenings. They moved to San Antonio for 2 years before settling in the Sacramento, CA, area for the boys to finish high school. With grit, Dianne went back to school to earn her associate’s degree as her boys went off to college. She and Norman worked hard through the years to give their kids everything they could, including out-of-state college tuition. After she retired, Dianne and Norman moved to Manassas in 2011 where she had a second career as “Grammy”: activity driver, babysitter, entertainer, listener, treat provider, and overall amazing grandmother. She became an active member at Sudley United Methodist Church, living out her faith as a hostess for twice monthly Thursday Biscuit Buddies and Monday women’s Bible studies. She will be remembered for her art (oil, acrylics, and sketches), for her commitment to putting others first, for her engaging storytelling, for her faith and wit, and for her love of family. She will be deeply missed by her family, many friends, and community of faith at Sudley UMC. She is survived by her husband, Norman R. Hertz; two sons, Benjamin Luke Hertz (wife, Amy Darda Hertz) of Palm Springs, CA, and their son, Cody Ray; and Michael Hertz (wife, MaryLu Klein Hertz) of Manassas, VA, and their children, Jacquelyn Lucette, Isaac Joseph, Alice Dianne, and Luke Henry. A celebration of life will be held for Dianne Lee Hertz on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11 am at Sudley United Methodist Church, 5308 Sudley Road Manassas, VA 20109. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to Sudley United Methodist Church.
