David Lane

DAVID R. LANE (61) of Manassas died on November 5. He was born in Georgetown, IN on February 11, 1943 to the late Lloyd and Irma (Voyles) Lane. He married Julia (Joya) Ann Belcher on December 22, 1973 in Pekin, IL and she survives. Mr. Lane was a graduate of Dayton High School in Dayton, IN and had attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. He had been the Director of Media Relations for the American Farm Bureau Federation national office in Washington, DC since April of 1990. Previously he had been appointed by President Reagan and Secretary of Agriculture John Block to be the Deputy Press Secretary for the US Dept. of Agriculture and was later named USDA's Director of Information. Before moving to Virginia in 1981, Mr. Lane had been on the staff of the Illinois State Dept. of Agriculture in a similar capacity and had been a reporter for two Illinois newspapers; the Pekin Daily Times and the Peoria Journal Star. He had resided previously for many years in Indiana where he had been employed by various media outlets including WAZY and WASK radio station, The Lafayette Leader and Lafayette Journal & Courier newspapers, all of the Lafayette, IN area. He had also recently assisted in editing and publishing a book "All My Love, Forever: Letters Home From A WWII Citizen-Soldier" based on his father's wartime letters. Mr. Lane had also done volunteer work as a writer for First Lady Barbara Bush and more recently as a Public Information Officer for the Manassas City Police Department. He was a member of the International Dutch Oven Society, the National Association of Farm Broadcasters and the North American Agricultural Journalists. As a youth he was very active in the Future Farmers of America and the 4-H program and was named the Outstanding Boy in Indiana 4-H achievement. His hobbies involved many outdoor adventures including hiking 250 miles on the Appalachian Trail when he was in his mid-fifties and participating in living history reenactments for the French-Canadian voyageurs during the fur trade era of the early 1700's. In 1973 he spent 6 months retracing a 3000-mile exploration of the Mississippi River system as part of the Joliet-Marquette Re-Enactment Expedition. His proudest moment was when he took part in a climbing expedition on Mt. Rainier and published an article about the experience. Mr. Lane is survived by his wife of 30 years, Julia A. "Joya" Lane; sons Douglas Lane of Indianapolis, IN and Brett Lane of Manassas, VA; daughters Lisa Crigger of Manito, IL, Michelle (Tracey) Quintero (husband: Raul) of Manassas, VA and Alicia King (husband: Donald M (Chuck) of Richmond, VA); siblings Dale Lane of Indianapolis, IN, Donna Scanlon (husband: Dave), and Dennis Lane both of Lafayette, IN. And 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister Diane Lane and his grandson Josh Simer. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, VA where a memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 10, 2004 with Deacon Donald King, Sr. officiating.
