David Michael Koonce

David Michael Koonce of Vienna, VA passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his true love and surrounded by family on Saturday, February 17, 2018. David was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on December 13, 1941, son of the late Helen Marguerite Harrington and George Coleman Koonce, Jr. After graduating from The University of Arkansas, David joined the Air Force where he was commissioned as an officer. His experience in the Air Force prepared him for the rest of his career, and he was very grateful for his opportunity to serve. David was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal for his expertise in negotiating defense contracts, which resulted in significant savings for the Air Force. He was recruited by Martin Marietta, later Lockheed Martin, and retired as the Director of Financial Analysis. David married Sally in 1984. They were sealed for eternity in 2001. David was an active member of the LDS church since his conversion, and he is forever grateful to George Farimond Jr. for baptizing him. He held many callings during his years as a member. David met Sally while singing in the Mormon Choir of Washington DC. He sang baritone and served as president for a number of years. They were the first couple to meet and marry from the choir. David brightened the lives of countless people with his love for family, friends, and the church; his devotion to Sally; his unwavering faith; his service, kindness, generosity, honor and integrity; his infectious sense of humor; his musical voice; his deep interest and research in genealogy; his romanticism and silly poetry skills; his love of a good story, and his passion for all things BBQ. He was a true character and all-around great guy that will be missed more than words can describe. David knew death was not the end and felt strongly that he was going home. We know he is reunited with loved ones and planning a big BBQ in the sky. Survivors include his loving wife Sally Koonce; his children Abby Armstrong, Marylee Barratt, Adam Champ, Alan Koonce, Sarah Koonce, Kevin Koonce, and Rachel Koonce; eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild; and his brother Phillip Koonce.
