Audrey Stonehill Hanson

Audrey Stonehill Hanson, 63, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 20 from natural causes. She was born on August 30, 1961, in Augusta, Georgia. Audrey is survived by her husband, Scott Hanson; her sons, Neil and Ian Davies; four grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren, and her cherished dog, Sisi. The only daughter and youngest of four siblings, she leaves behind two brothers and was preceded in death by her eldest. A funeral service will be held on August 2 at the Oakton Stake Center 2719 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, Virginia. The viewing will begin at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM. A proud graduate of Brigham Young University, Audrey began her career on Capitol Hill before earning her Master’s in Secondary Education from George Mason University. She went on to teach World History and Sociology and was also a Department Chair at W.T. Woodson High School, where she found her calling and community. Though many will remember her as an educator, historian, musician, and world traveler, Audrey would have first and foremost described herself as a “Mum,” and eventually a “Nana.” Motherhood defined her purpose and shaped her every decision. As a single mother, she chose a teaching career so she could share school schedules and breaks with her boys. She poured her creativity into handmade costumes, quilts, gifts, and scrapbooks, always with her children and grandchildren in mind. She drew strength from her spiritual community, surrounding her sons with mentors and role models, to shape them into responsible men. She extended that same maternal spirit to her church service, particularly in her role as a leader in the Young Women’s organization. There, she found some of the most fulfilling moments of her life: teaching, mentoring, and simply being present for those who needed her. She loved those girls as fiercely as her own sons and threw herself into that role with equal passion. For her, it was another way to be a mum, to build connection, offer guidance, and create a community that felt like home. Her empathy was boundless. Audrey gave endlessly to her family, her students, her church, and often to strangers. She offered help without hesitation and comfort without judgment. She was a person people turned to when they were hurting, and the first to offer help when someone was in need. Her legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and never-ending love. And while her passing was unexpected, we cherish the time and the love we shared together and are grateful to know she is finally at peace. She leaves behind a family, and a community, immeasurably better for having known her.
