Peter Michael McVey

Major General Peter M. McVey (Retired) Major General McVey passed away Sunday, August 25th. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Adele, their children Erin (Mark) and Peter Jr. (Lisa) and their 4 grandchildren Kasey (Nate) Kylie, Tommy (Rachel) and Madison. MG Peter McVey’s distinguished career of almost 37 years includes command of the 3rd Squadron, 7th Calvary and the 1st Brigade,3rd Infantry Division. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant from Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, MG McVey’s tremendous contributions to the mounted force also include an assignment as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (G-3) of V Corps, U.S. Army Europe and the 7th Army and several years with the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment. As the Program Executive Officer for Armored Systems Modernization, MG McVey was the general officer responsible for development testing, production and fielding of the Army Combat Vehicle and the Team Chief who successfully fielded the M1 tank at Fort Hood, Texas and Europe. It was MG McVey who led the change out of M1 Abrams tanks and M1A1 Abrams tanks for M2 Bradleys for M2A2 Bradleys to U.S. forces in Saudi Arabia just before the onset of Desert Storm. These systems would play a vital role in the successful prosecution of the Gulf War. MG McVey holds a BA in economics from St. John’s University and an MS in behavioral science from Newark State College. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic and Armor Officer Advance Courses, Command and General Staff College, and the National War College. His decorations include: The Distinguished Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the General Staff Identification Badge. MG McVey continued his service to the mounted force in retirement, forging an extensive dialogue with industry and government development and testing communities. He played a key role as an advisor to the Army Science Board, working to establish a requirement for the continued modernization of the Armor Force, and labored without compensation to preserve the production of the M1A2 tank. MG McVey actively supported the U.S. Armor Association as both a member and the Association’s Vice President. Mass of Christian Burial and interment will take place at a later date at Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel and Arlington National Cemetery.
