Lamont Sargent

With great sorrow, the Sargent and Byars families announce the passing of our kind, brave, and unimaginably generous husband, father, brother, and friend, Lamont Sargent. At only age 48, Lamont passed away unexpectedly on July 5th, 2023. Lamont was born in January 1975 to Lottie (Cantey) and Arnold Sargent in Jersey City, New Jersey. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, he began his higher education at Rhode Island College and, shortly after, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He started as an Infantryman and was ultimately promoted to Sergeant. After serving eight valiant years as a Marine, Lamont continued to serve the nation via a new career with the U.S. Department of State as a Diplomatic Security instructor. Upon transitioning to the position of Sergeant with the Security Protective Service, Lamont simultaneously matriculated with a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice. Lamont received many accommodations from U.S. Homeland Security, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Department of State. Lamont made his profession of Christian faith at a young age. While his spiritual journey was hard-won, he loved Christ and was a principled man of integrity. Lamont’s personality was larger than life, and he genuinely loved everyone. His favorites included leg and arm day at the gym, his bi-annual hunting trips with military comrades, cooking for his family, and attempting to grill. Lamont was the life of each party. Lamont had opinions that all needed to hear, whether a political debate or a lengthy text message. He loved his pets and had many stories about bonding with his canine companions, and we know Lamont is on a long walk with Milo, Pearl, Wednesday, Sebastian, Storm, Micha, Sam, and Cleo! Lamont, an active father in EVERY aspect, cherished his children James (20), Bella (16), and Carrington (11), who survive him along with his spouse Rachelle Byars-Sargent of 18 years. Lamont also leaves behind two sisters, Marie Sargent and Yolanda Sargent both of Jersey City, NJ; five brothers, Arnold (Diane), Edward (Demetria), Michael (Michelle), and Shawn all of Jersey City, NJ and Chris (Zelma) of Newark, NJ; one mother-in-love, Ann D. Byars of Middletown, DE; brother/sister-in-love, Edward (Angela) Bowers of Middletown, DE and Cedric (Talonna) Moore of Pinole, CA; as well as many loving cousins, four nephews, and three nieces. Lamont has a vast extended family: Jason Childrey of Baltimore, MD, Benard Drayton and family of Avenel, NJ, Phil (Tiffany) Rodriquez of Dinwiddie, VA, and a host of best friends around the world. Lamont is preceded in death by his parents, James Sargent (brother), Ella Cantey (grandmother), Juliete Hunter (aunt), William Hunt (uncle), Wayne Hunter (cousin), “C” Drayton (family friend), and Daniel Byars (father-in-love).
