Kathleen Margaret Tumulty

Kathleen Tumulty of Centreville, Va., died at home June 12 surrounded by family members after a 14-month battle with ovarian cancer. She was 68. A native New Yorker, Kathleen was known as “Nana” to her 10 grandchildren and a loving caregiver to the many children enrolled in her home daycare business for many years. She grew up as the middle child in a large Irish-Catholic family and spent her school years living in the Village of Stewart Manor on Long Island. She graduated in 1973 from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, where she participated in the high-kicking dance squad known as the Rockettes. Kathleen worked for several years as a typist for New York Life, a title insurance company in Floral Park and later as a legal secretary in the Westchester County community of Mamaroneck. She subsequently worked in the student activities office of the College of New Rochelle while attending as a part time student. Kathleen later attended Dutchess Community College as a nursing student but moved to northern Virginia in December 1992 before completing her degree. She opened a home daycare business shortly after moving to the northern Virginia community of Centreville, operating it for many years until all four of her children graduated from high school. For several years Kathleen ran the used uniform exchange program at St. Timothy Catholic School in Chantilly where three of her children attended classes. Kathleen was the daughter of the late Matthew Clare and Margaret Mary Clare (nee Considine). She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Brian Joseph Tumulty, and four children: Clare Torres, of Bristow, Va.; Maureen Faley of Centreville, Va.; Brendan Tumulty of Holly Springs, N.C.; and Caitlin Warren of Charlottesville, Va. Other survivors include daughter in law Claudia Tumulty and three sons in law, Mario Torres, Zach Faley, and William Warren. Ten grandchildren are among her survivors. Also surviving are two sisters and two brothers: Sharon Clare of Seaford, Long Island; Maureen Tumulty of Washington State; Timothy Clare of St. James, Long Island; and Kevin Clare of the Philippines.
