Charles Kirk Graves

Charles Kirk Graves (73) of Gainesville, VA went to be with his Lord on May 22, 2023 after a short battle with cancer. Chuck was born on March 15, 1950 to Robert Herbert Graves and Virginia Rensch Graves in Washington, DC. Chuck graduated from Potomac Senior High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland in 1968 where he met the love of his life, Marlene Louise Schiller. They were married on April 4, 1970 and went on to have three children, Kimberly Leigh (Roy) of White Plains, MD, John-Charles Preston (Julie) of Burke, VA and Sarah Elizabeth Rae of Gainesville, VA. He was Papa to his three grandchildren, William Robert, Silas Preston and Annika Louise. His family was his pride and joy, but the role he cherished the most was that of a loving, faithful husband for 53 years to Marlene. Chuck retired after a 38-year career in the Federal Government working at DC National Guard, Department of Justice and Department of Agriculture. He also served as a reservist in the DC National Guard and the Army Reserve ending his career as a Major. Chuck then went on to have another career working for Virginia ABC and retired again in 2020. Chuck loved attending live theater (especially musicals) and Washington Nationals games with his wife and brother. He was a lifelong fan of Charlie Brown, the music of Frank Sinatra and was always described as a kind and caring man who loved spending time with friends and family. Chuck became a Christian and was baptized alongside his daughter Kim in 1980 at Westover Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, church treasurer, Sunday School director and teacher as well serving in many other capacities. Chuck and Marlene became members of Manassas Baptist Church in 2010 where they both serve(d) as deacons and Chuck taught the King’s Gentlemen Bible Study. Chuck was preceded in death by his father and mother and his Aunt Shirley (Mike) Secrest who he lovingly cared for during the last months of her life. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, his children and his grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Graves (Nina), his sister Cande Jarboe (Jack) and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Chuck will be at 11:30 am on Tuesday, May 30th followed by his funeral service at 12:30 pm at Manassas Baptist Church, 8730 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20110. Burial will immediately follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens. A reception will take place at Manassas Baptist Church following the burial.
