Allan Frederick Guy

Allan Frederick Guy, beloved son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and remarkable friend to many passed away at his home in Manassas, Virginia on August 20, 2015. Though born in Bethesda, Maryland on September 2, 1965, Allan was a true Virginia gentleman. A third generation artist, illustrator and designer, Allan lived and worked for most of his life in Old Town Manassas, Virginia. Allan is preceded in death by his father, Richard Guy who also was a renowned artist. His survivors include his mother, Shirley Guy, his sister Marianne Pendlebury (Steve), brothers Stephen Guy (Kristy), Clayton Guy (Angel), nieces and nephews Michael Pendlebury (Teresa), Laura Delaney (CJ), Julia Guy, Chase Bailey, Evan Guy, the extended Root family, and special friend Cynthia Roman and her son Tyler Knight. Allan graduated from Osbourn High school in 1983 and served as class president during his senior year. During his college years at East Carolina University, Allan authored and illustrated a comic for the school newspaper called "Walkin the Plank". After graduation with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1987, Allan entered and won a competition to redesign the Pepsi soda can resulting in the "Cool Can" issued for the holidays. This recognition jump started Allan's successful career. He moved to Connecticut to live with his brother Clay and work in Manhattan. Allan had 12 years experience with midtown Manhattan firms, as Design Manager for Lipson, Alport, Glass and Associates, one of the nation's top brand identity firms, and the Senior Designer for Gianninoto Associates, one of the oldest design firms in the country. Allan worked with many national and international companies, including Bacardi-Martini (for whom he designed Bacardi Limon, the top-selling new-spirits brand of the decade), Brown-Forman Worldwide, Jim Beam, Hiram Walker, Cadbury Schweppes, A&W Root Beer, Sara Lee Coffees and Teas, and Chock Full o' Nuts, among others. His design for the Chock Full O' Nuts coffee can featuring the skyline of New York City with the Twin Towers, has become a collectable item. After moving back to Manassas, Allan formed his own studio, Allan Guy Design and Illustration (A. Guy Studio), specializing in premium branding and packaging for regional wineries, distilleries and historic organizations. Some clients included: King Family Vineyards, Philip Carter Vineyard and Winery, Ingleside Winery, Paradise Springs Winery, Christensen Ridge Winery and Potomac Point Vineyard and Winery. In addition to designing the branding for Silverback Distillery, KO Distilling, Chesapeake Bay Distillery, Beach Spirits, Catoctin Creek Distilling and Wild Scotsman Whiskey, he designed premium decanter packaging for the historic George Washington Straight Rye Whiskey and Martha Washington rum, both distilled at Mount Vernon, Virginia. His label and bottle design for Silverback Distillery's Beringi Vodka recently won a Bronze Medal at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition for Packaging Design. A painter in oils and watercolors, Allan used fly-fishing trips and favorite locales as inspiration. He had a special love for the family retreats: a lakeside cabin at Deep Creek in Maryland and Greystone in the Catskills of upstate New York. Allan loved nothing more than to take off to rural locales and photograph or simply enjoy the history and beauty of the area. He rode across the country in his Jeep bringing back visions of a beautiful world. Allan saw the world in all its beauty and color. His current art show, "American Geography", is hanging in the North Gallery of the King Family Vineyard until August 31 and will be moved to Silverback Distillery shortly thereafter. It is a collection of oils and watercolor inspired by his travels in the Mid Atlantic states and features bolder colors and a looser style of painting. "Not so tight" as Allan described it. Allan loved gardening, history, genealogy, fishing and the town of Manassas. Civic and community organizations that Allan was associated with were: the Old Town Business Association, the Manassas City Police Association, the Manassas Battlefield Trust, Historic Manassas and the Manassas Museum. In 2012, Allan designed the logo and banners for the Sesquicentennial of the 2"nd Battle of Manassas, and bottled a special wine label that was served at the commemorative event. Currently you can see two of Allan's paintings on banners flying from lamp posts in Manassas, along with his father's banners. They are a fitting tribute to father and son artists and their close relationship. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his love of family, his intelligence, his southern charm, kisses on the hand and his love of conversation (never short!) "Uncle Owl" to his nieces and nephews, he was known for wild jeep rides, fishing expeditions, and crazy Christmas gifts.
